Offline pages: a notice page while your server is unreachable
If your server goes down, visitors usually only see a browser error. With an offline page, IPv64.net shows them a notice page instead: the service is temporarily unavailable – optionally with your logo, contact details and your own text. The offline page is a target in DNS failover; you do not need a backup server of your own.
What is an offline page?
An offline page is a web page IPv64.net serves for you while your actual server is unreachable. It works together with DNS failover:
- Health check reports an outage
A health check monitors your service. When it reports an outage, the DNS failover policy triggers. - Record points to the offline page
For every A or AAAA record with an offline page rule, IPv64.net switches the record to an IPv64.net server that serves the notice page. - Switching back
Once your service is reachable again, the failover switches back (with automatic fallback) and visitors reach your server again.
When and how the switch happens is set in the failover policy, see DNS failover.
Default page or your own offline page
You have two options:
| Option | Content |
|---|---|
| Default IPv64.net Offline Page | Always available without creating anything. Shows the IPv64.net logo, the requested name and the notice that the site is temporarily unavailable. |
| Your own offline page | Like the default page, plus your icon, contact e-mail, phone number, an alternative website and your own text. |
How many offline pages of your own you can create depends on your account class, see Account & limits. When the limit is reached, IPv64.net reports Offline Pages Limit reached.
Create an offline page
- Open the page
In the menu, open DynDNS → Offline Pages (ipv64.net/offline_page). - Create a new page
Click Create new DNS Offline Page. You seeNew Offline Page successful created.and the list reloads. - Edit
Click the page's name in the list to edit it. - Save the settings
Fill in the fields (see Content) and click Save Settings.
The DNS Offline Pages list shows for each page:
| Column | Meaning |
|---|---|
Status In use | The page is the target of a rule in a failover policy. |
Status Useless | The page is not used in any rule yet. |
| Policy | Name of the failover policy using the page. |
| Views | Page views during an active failover. Preview calls do not count. |
Content and icon
In the General Settings card you define what visitors see:
| Field | Content | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Offline Pagename | Name of the page, only for you (list, selection in the failover) | required |
| Domain for Offline Page | The name visitors call, e.g. yourdomain.ipv64.net | required, must be a valid host name, otherwise URL is not an valid URL. |
| Contact E-Mail | E-mail address for visitors | Invalid addresses are saved as empty. |
| Contact Phone | Phone number, e.g. +49123456789 | Digits only, with an optional leading +. With spaces or other characters the field is saved as empty. |
| Alternative website / url | Fallback website without https://, e.g. second-website.com | Shown as an https:// link. |
| Short further information | Your own text, e.g. reason and expected duration of the outage | Line breaks are kept. |
IPv64.net matches your offline page via the Domain for Offline Page field. Enter exactly the name visitors call, including the prefix (e.g. www.yourdomain.ipv64.net). If the name does not match, visitors see the default page without your details.
On ipv64.net the text field is labelled “HTML code allowed”. When saving, however, IPv64.net converts HTML characters into plain text.
Contact e-mail, phone and alternative website appear in the block The owner of the website has provided the following additional information. The alternative website is only shown if you also enter an e-mail, phone or text. The text appears in its own card Further information from the domain owner.
Upload an icon
In the Offline Page Icon card you upload your own logo. It replaces the IPv64.net logo on the offline page.
- File types: PNG, WebP, JPEG
- At most 1 MByte and 1024 × 1024 pixels
Possible messages: Filetype will not accepted., This is not an image., File is too large., Dimensions are too large. You delete an uploaded icon with ; after that you can upload a new one.
Preview
Preview (in the list or while editing) shows the page as visitors see it during an outage – even without an active failover. The preview has this address:
https://ipv64.net/offline?domain=yourdomain.ipv64.net&preview
Without &preview, the page only shows your own details while the failover is actually triggered.
Connect to DNS failover
For an offline page to appear, you link it to a DNS record in a DNS failover policy. How to create the policy and health checks is described under DNS failover.
- Open the policy
Open your policy under DynDNS → DNS Failover. - Choose the record
In the Offline Page card, choose the record under Select DNS Record. Active A and AAAA records that are not yet in a failover rule are listed. - Choose the page
Next to Offline Page →, choose the Default IPv64.net Offline Page or one of your own pages. - Add the rule
Click Add Rule to Policy. You seeRule added to DNS Failover Policy. Failover active in a few seconds.
Each rule applies to exactly one record. If your name has an A and an AAAA record, add a rule for both. In one policy you can combine rules with an offline page and rules with another backup target.
| Message | Meaning |
|---|---|
DNS Record already exists in another failover policy. | The record is already part of a rule. |
Rules Limit exceeded. | The failover rule limit of your account class is reached. Offline page rules count towards it. |
Do not any Changes while in Failover Mode. | The policy has just switched over; you can change rules only afterwards. |
Under DynDNS, the domain then shows the card Protected by … DNS Failover Policy. Its Failover Destination shows the name of your offline page or Default IPv64.net Offline Page.
What visitors see
During a failover, a visitor calling your domain sees:
- your icon or the IPv64.net logo,
- the requested address with the notice seems to be temporarily unavailable.,
- the explanation that the operator uses the IPv64.net DNS failover service and that visitors should contact the operator with questions,
- with your own offline page, also your contact details, the alternative website and your text.
The notice page is in English. IPv64.net counts each call during the failover in the page's Views.
Delete an offline page
In the list, deletes an offline page after a confirmation, together with its icon. If the page is still used in a failover rule, IPv64.net refuses: Offline Page is part of an Failover Policy. Remove it before. Remove the rule in the failover policy first.
